Richard Pryor (1940–2005)

 Highly influential, and always controversial, African-American actor/comedian who was equally well known for his colorful language during his live comedy shows, as for his fast paced life, multiple marriages and battles with drug addiction.

Mr Pryor, admitted on the video above that the fire that nearly killed him in June 1980, while free-basing cocaine was in fact a suicide attempt.

 

Richard Pryor, quips on the surface masked a sensitivity that led to him “self-medicating” with alcohol and drugs. The drugs may have helped to obliterate memories of his childhood, during which he was also abused by a neighbour.

Unknown to many, Richard Pryor was a long time advocate against animal cruelty, and he campaigned against fast food chains and circus shows to address issues of animal welfare.

He was married a total of seven times, and fathered eight children.
